Rabbit's Raja Ampat Snorkeling Adventure

Raja Ampat Archipelago is in NE Indonesia, on the equator and at the heart of the Coral Triangle in West Papua province. The marine biodiversity is the world's highest, with more than 500 species of coral and more than 1,300 species of fish. Our live-abord, traditional style, Indonesian motor schooner had all the modern comforts and facilities, offering our small group an intimate exploration of this underwater paradise located far from the beaten track. We flew from Portland to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta to Makassar to Sorong where we boarded the Bidadari and then back again. All photos are Copyright 2011 Larry Lenon All Rights Reserved. Time to review our trip leader and naturalist's (Wayne's) photos of today's snorkels on his iPad. I saw that one! Santa's got to get me one of these!

  • A little sun will have me dry in no time. A guy can't get too much sun - - it puts hair on your chest!
  • Cookies for snack time! The box is written in some foreign language. I wonder how they will taste!
  • So, according to my GPS, we were over there today! How many islands are there in Raja Ampat, anyway?
  • After a snack and map check, it's time to chow down! Everyone be careful! That lazy susan moves fast.
  • Where's the tender? I'm ready for more fun in the water! Yes, I know - there are strong currents. But I am in shape! That should be obvious. I can handle it!
  • Anemonefish are so cute! Just like in the movie. And these yellow sea squirts were all over the place.
  • Check out the striped suits on these fancy surgeonfish! That's what they are called - Striped Surgeonfish.
  • So many fish; so little time. My head is spinning! I need more cookies!
  • Foreign or not - these hit the spot! Good thing they don't have any calories. Seems like it was easier to jump up here earlier in the trip...

  • One last snorkel before heading home. Everybody wants to help me get into the tender. Hey Wayne, let's make it last a long time!
  • See what I mean about these sea squirts being everywhere? Wayne calls them tunicates. They are so weird looking. And how about the crimson soft coral? Corals come in every color and shape out here.
  • A saddled butterflyfish! Cool, huh?
  • This guy was moving really fast for something with eight legs. Good thing his whiskers are waxed so they don't get tangled.
  • Cowabunga! A tassled wobbegong shark!! Do not disturb. He's very moody - bites if bothered. Best we keep moving along.
  • This was my favorite - an Emperor Angelfish, peacefully swimming in the waters of Raja Ampat, NE Indonesia, off the NW tip of West Papua New Guinea.
  • After another excellent dinner, I'm putting a "RA" next to the ones I saw on this trip. Even tho I'm starting early and it's still light out, I may be up late tonight. Good thing I'm in the upper bunk!
  • Passengers and crew on the last day together. Everybody wanted to have their picture taken with me and shake my hand or get a hug. What a fun group!
  • After another night in the Sheraton in Jakarta, now we are waiting for the big bus to take us to the airport.
  • Me and my new buddy Ken, in LAX. He wanted to hear all about my trip. After a chat, it's on to Portland and home!
