Rabbit's Raja Ampat Snorkeling Adventure

Raja Ampat Archipelago is in NE Indonesia, on the equator and at the heart of the Coral Triangle in West Papua province. The marine biodiversity is the world's highest, with more than 500 species of coral and more than 1,300 species of fish. Our live-abord, traditional style, Indonesian motor schooner had all the modern comforts and facilities, offering our small group an intimate exploration of this underwater paradise located far from the beaten track. We flew from Portland to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta to Makassar to Sorong where we boarded the Bidadari and then back again. All photos are Copyright 2011 Larry Lenon All Rights Reserved.   • Rabbit's Raja Ampat Snorkeling Adventure<br /> <br /> October 21 thru November 5, 2011<br /> <br /> Reefs throughout Raja Ampat are among the world’s most pristine. Traveling for the sixth time under the auspices and exceptional leadership of the nonprofit, eco-friendly Oceanic Society Expeditions ( <a href="http://www.oceanicsociety.org">http://www.oceanicsociety.org</a>), we snorkeled along mushroom-shaped islands, a natural refuge for massive concentrations of hard and soft corals. We also took short hikes in several of the larger islands, whose equatorial jungles are inhabited by a variety of birds.<br /> <br /> With daily diverse snorkeling opportunities, combined with a mix of local island exploration, this is one of the best remote snorkeling expeditions possible.

  • Security check!! Had to unload all my pockets and take my shoes and belt off....

  • Here I am getting unloaded and settled in for our 14 hour flight to Hong Kong.

  • Leaving Jakarta airport and heading for an overnight in the Sheraton. Jet lag supreme...
  • Arriving in Sorong the next day, we were greeted by 95。heat, fending off lots of porters wanting our bags, and waiting for our rides to the boat - - KM Bidadari. Here we met our Indonesian guide, Dalton. That's him on the far right.
  • Next, we boarded the 12-passenger, 123-foot long motorized schooner KM Bidadari. We were in cabin #3, starboard amidships, or about the third porthole from the left in the shot above.<br /> <br /> The Bidadari has six air-conditioned cabins, each with en-suite facilities. In the air-conditioned Saloon are the dining and lounge areas, which is a comfortable setting to enjoy the library, socialize and review the day's activities. The canvas-covered area on the second deck just in front of the Wheel House was the perfect place for conversations and a beer, while the open top deck, outfitted with lounge chairs, afforded great views of the night sky.
  • Home, sweet home for the next twelve days. Our very own private cabin!

  • I was not snoring!! Rabbits do not snore!
  • "En suite”, complete with a shower! And plenty of hot water...
  • Today's first snorkel will be around this island, and it's got a great beach!
  • I always tried to be first one into the tender so I could get a good seat near the bow. I love the spray in my face! We all needed help getting into the tender - it was a moving target!
