Mongolia 2008 Standing to one side of the entrance to the central Zuu of Buddha temple is Gur gyi mGon po, or Mahakala, a protector diety emanation of Avalokiteshvara. Three eyes give him the power to understand the ultimate reality of past, present and future. He holds a wooden gong or gandhi stick from which all other forms of Mahakala emanate and which is used in Buddhist monasteries to call monks and nuns to meetings.
