Mongolia 2008 - Erdene Zuu Monastery, Karakhorum, Tseterleg, Horgo Volcano

Central Mongolia : Erdene Zuu monastery, Karakhorum, the city of Tseterleg and Horgo Volcano in August 2008. Photos are presented in the order taken.   • Mongolia 2008 Standing to one side of the entrance to the central Zuu of Buddha temple is Gur gyi mGon po, or Mahakala, a protector diety emanation of Avalokiteshvara. Three eyes give him the power to understand the ultimate reality of past, present and future. He holds a wooden gong or gandhi stick from which all other forms of Mahakala emanate and which is used in Buddhist monasteries to call monks and nuns to meetings. He crushes underfoot all obstacles on the path to enlightenment. Personal diety guardian for Kublai Khaan and for Mongolian Buddhists in general and for most Buddhist monasteries.   • Mongolia 2008 On the other side of the entrance to the the Zuu of Buddha central temple is Shri Devi (Palden Lhamo), protector diety of the Gelugpa order and female version of Mahakala. Erdene Zuu Monastery. Central Mongolia August 26
