Tanzania 2014 Nrorongoro Crater Day 1

Tanzania is in eastern Africa, just below Uganda and Kenya, and on the Indian Ocean. At the end of our eleven day/ten-night Zambia safari, we flew from Livingston to Johannesburg for an overnight stay. The next day we flew to Arusha, Tanzania via Nairobi. Arriving at Arusha Coffee Lodge at around 8 pm, we spent two nights and one full day relaxing there before our next adventure. On the morning of 28 August 2014, our driverguide, Nelson, picked us up at ACL in his 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser for the trip to Ngorongoro Crater. After three nights and two full days in the Crater while staying at Lemala Ngorongoro Camp, we flew by Coastal bush plane out of Manyara airstrip to Kogatende airstrip for four nights at Sayari Mara Camp in the remote NW corner of the Serengeti near the Mara River and the Kenyan border. All arrangements for our requested Tanzanian safari beginning with our arrival at ACL until our return to Arusha and departure from ACL on 5 September 2014 were made by Africa Travel Resource.

  • Something has gotten their attention off to the left.
  • Mom gives a low grunt to whatever creatures are off to the left. All three cubs are now on a break for breakfast.
  • Ok, time to quit fooling around. Breakfast is over, kids, Mom is up and alert, ready to defend her cubs to whatever is out there.
  • She gives a roar to let the intruders know that she means business. One cub takes an interest.
  • Alert and waiting for a response, the lioness is ready to take on whatever presents itself.
  • Well, it is the relatives. A series of butt sniffing confirms that this is family.
  • Mom gives the "all clear" to her cubs, who, along with Aunt Ruth, come running over to join the group.
  • Harmony and peace, the family reunited. Cubs, Aunt Ruth and the other relations sharing time together.
  • Ok, break over. Back to the business of hiding out and finding brunch.
  • This is what she was looking at. Somewhere out there, lunch lurks, as far as the lioness is concerned.
  • Common ostrich - a male, displaying by ruffling its considerable collection of feathers. The pinkish hue of its neck and legs indicate that it is excited. It is the biggest and fastest running bird in the world. Too bad it is also flightless.
  • Kori bustard.
  • black-backed jackal. Not often seen in the daytime. Mates for life.
  • Three hippos in a small pool, just about the right size for this group.
  • Looks peaceful enough, but hippos are the most dangerous large animal in Africa, known to attack canoeists and human swimmers. They can run 30 mph. How fast can you run? They usually come out of the water at night to graze on whatever is available.
  • A kite lookout tree.
  • Black-shouldered (winged) kites, on the lookout for insects and small reptiles.
  • Black-shouldered (winged) kite. Red eyes.
  • A herd of Cape buffalo grazing on the savanna.
  • A dominant male Cape Buffalo, probably in the 8-10 year old range. Note the massive, fused horns on the top of his head, while the females have more slender horns. Younger and older bulls roam the savanna in bachelor herds or singularly.
