Tanzania 2014 Serengeti Mara Day 2C

Tanzania is in eastern Africa, just below Uganda and Kenya, and on the Indian Ocean. At the end of our eleven day/ten-night Zambia safari, we flew from Livingston to Johannesburg for an overnight stay. The next day we flew to Arusha, Tanzania via Nairobi. Arriving at Arusha Coffee Lodge at around 8 pm, we spent two nights (one full day) relaxing there before our next adventure. On the morning of 28 August 2014, our guide and driver, Nelson, picked us up at ACL in his 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser for the trip to Ngorongoro Crater. After three nights and two full days in the Crater while staying at Lemala Ngorongoro Camp, we flew by Coastal bush plane out of Manyara Airstrip to Kogatende Airstrip for four nights at Sayari Mara Camp in the remote NW corner of the Serengeti near the Mara River and the Kenyan border. Albert Alfred Lucas was our guide and driver. All arrangements for our requested Tanzanian safari from our arrival at ACL through our return to Arusha and departure from ACL on 5 September 2014 were made by Africa Travel Resource.

  • Topi - one of the fastest antelopes in Africa - up to 50 mph. This male has noticed something in the savanna grassland.
  • It's a Cheetah - the fastest land animal on the planet - able to accelerate to a speed of 70 mph in three seconds - non-retractable claws - can purr but not roar - excellent sight, which is how they find their prey and avoid lions and hyenas.
  • Taking no chances, the Topi gets out of there while the getting is good.
  • Cheetah on the prowl. Stalking to within 100 feet of its prey in the savanna grass seen here and a burst of speed are its strong suites. Lions and hyenas would be exposed in this environment, so the cheetah in this setting has an advantage in bringing down prey and in avoiding its larger and more powerful adversaries.

  • Note the wounds on the right elbow and right rear flank, possibly from a tussle with a prey or from some other predator trying to steal its kill.
  • An early-afternoon mud bath - cools the skin, keeps bugs off, eliminates wrinkles and relieves arthritis. Now on to the blanket wrap and then a good massage!
  • 1:20 pm and time to cross the Mara River to the south side for the short drive to Camp for lunch.
  • Crossandra.
  • As we came out of our tent at about 4 pm, this Spotted Bush Snake greeted us from the corner of the porch.
  • Mating Leopards on a kopjes. The female is up and about, encouraging the male to wake up.
  • Four minutes later she wraps her tail around his neck and shoulder. He seems to be catching on.
  • After the tail wrap, it took only 12 seconds for the male to figure it out.
