Zambia 2014 Camps, People, Travel

Zambia is in central southern Africa. We flew there from Portland, Oregon to Amsterdam to Lusaka (Zambia's capital). The next day our six-member, Natural Habitat group flew northward to Mfuwe in South Luangwa National Park. Our safari began with three nights at Kuyenda Bush Camp hosted by the legendary guide Phil Berry and his dedicated and delightful companion Babette Alfieri. Phil's encyclopedic knowledge of the local wildlife and pioneering expertise in leading walking safaris and in navigating game drives both day and night plus Babette's skill in crafting a luxurious experience for guests in a remote bush camp made this our perfect first-safari adventure. On to Kapamba Bush Camp for two nights, one night at Mfuwe Lodge, and three nights at Busanga Bush Camp in Kafue NP. The safari ended in Livingston overnight at Toka Leya Camp on the Zambezi River followed by a guided tour of Victoria Falls.

Excellent service, superb food including vegetarian choices.

  • Afternoon game drive in an open Land Rover from Kuyenda Bush Camp. This is one of the best roads in the area.
  • Tea and cookie break in a shady spot near the end of the morning game drive. Phil Berry on the right.
  • Back at Kuyenda Bush Camp. Each place setting for lunch had a different animal as a napkin ring - very creative.
  • Kuyenda Bush Camp. Another gourmet lunch is served.
  • Excellent service, superb food including vegetarian choices.
  • Kuyenda Bush Camp. The friendship flows as guests, managers and guide share lunches and dinners at one table. This was one of the advantages of limiting the tour to six people.
  • Kuyenda Bush Camp lounge and bar.
  • Our cabin at Kuyenda Bush Camp.
  • Our cabin at Kuyenda Bush Camp. Very comfortable, well appointed.
  • The opening to the left of the wall hanging leads to the en suite bath.
  • Kuyenda Bush Camp. The best bush camp en suite facilities.
  • Double sinks and shower just beyond.
  • There was plenty of hot water for a "bucket" shower, by request.
  • The usual and much enjoyed tea and cookies stop on the morning game drive.
  • Two hardy travelers on the primal plains of the Zambian savanna.
  • Babette and Phil, connecting us with recent lion and leopard adventures at our sundowner rendezvous.
  • Off on another early morning game drive at Kapamba Bush Camp.
  • No problem with this crossing with Phil at the controls in our 4WD Land Rover - more of a truck than a car.
  • There are only four chalets at Kapamba Bush Camp. This one was ours.
  • The veranda with a view out over the Kapamba River. Each chalet is only three-sided with steel gates that can enclose the open side to keep the wildlife out at night. Once we had an elephant eating that nearby tree at about 2 am.
