Zambia 2014 Wild Dogs, Buffalo, Elephants, etc

Zambia is in central southern Africa. We flew there from Portland, Oregon to Amsterdam to Lusaka (Zambia's capital). The next day our six-member, Natural Habitat group flew northward to Mfuwe in South Luangwa National Park. Our safari began with three nights at Kuyenda Bush Camp hosted by the legendary guide Phil Berry and his dedicated and delightful companion Babette Alfieri. Phil's encyclopedic knowledge of the local wildlife and pioneering expertise in leading walking safaris and in navigating game drives both day and night plus Babette's skill in crafting a luxurious experience for guests in a remote bush camp made this our perfect first-safari adventure. On to Kapamba Bush Camp for two nights, one night at Mfuwe Lodge, and three nights at Busanga Bush Camp in Kafue NP. The safari ended in Livingston overnight at Toka Leya Camp on the Zambezi River followed by a guided tour of Victoria Falls.

A large herd of impala about to race off into the woods during a morning game drive from Kuyenda Bush Camp.

  • White-tailed mongoose, solitary and mainly nocturnal, on the hunt during a night drive out of Kuyenda Bush Camp.
  • With excellent sight, smell and hearing senses, zebras are hard for predators to catch. One ear on alert toward our Land Rover, the other one picking up sounds in the other direction.
  • Immature and adult warthogs. The white hairs on the youngster may fool some predators into thinking they are the razor-sharp tusks of mature warthogs.
  • Vervet monkeys.
  • Male impala.
  • Bushbuck.
  • More impala.
  • Red Lechwe ???
  • Untitled photo
  • Female kudu.
  • This is probably the same elephant striding along on the same route into Kuyenda Bush Camp as on the prior day in the afternoon. At around midnight this time, the staff had to chase him out from behind the huts with a honking Land Rover, banging pots and pans, yelling and screaming and flashlights. This went on for some minutes and over about half a mile out into the expansive savanna in front of the camp. I slept thru the whole episode, but others found it quite entertaining.
  • On our way out of Kuyenda Bush Camp for a night drive, here he is again, having dinner prior to desert of sugar cane reeds that enclose each cabin's en suite bathroom.
  • He can eat up to 600 pounds of this stuff a day. Since elephants have a rather inefficient digestive system, they have to eat a lot of vegetation.
  • No wonder this elephant was so energetic - the scent coming from his temporal gland indicates that he is in musth - a period of high testosterone levels that make him easily provoked.
  • Two more female kudus, on an afternoon game drive out of Kuyenda Bush Camp.
  • An olive baboon in a rare moment of repose.
  • Large spotted or blotched genet seen on a night drive out of Kuyenda Bush Cmap.

  • Cape buffalo almost never retreated from us when approached by our safari vehicle loaded with noisy tourists and clicking cameras. Here, we obviously attracted their attention, and they would just stand there until we drove away.
  • Savanna scene, not much grass. Warthog, impala, Cape buffalo, waterbuck.
